Research Focus:
Our lab specifically focuses on the genetic improvement of narcotic crops, Papaver somniferum (opium poppy) and Cannabis sativa (Ganja/Hemp). We utilize these two major crops as our study system to decipher the underlying molecular mechanism of metabolic quantitative traits (mQTLs). Additionally, our research group extends interest in understanding the molecular mechanisms of plant invasion through Structural variations (SVs), Transposon element (TE) insertion site, and ploidy analysis. The identification of major QTLs, candidate gene(s), key haplotypes, and improved plant varieties are the major aims of our research team.

Highlighted Research Activities:

  • Development of Cannabis chemotypes (I and III)
  • Development of low THC Cannabis fiber line with BOHECO
  • Characterizing the Genome of Indian Cannabis Chemotypes: A Focus on Cannabinoid Biosynthesis
  • QTLseq reveals key candidate SNPs/genes in the oripavine pathway in opium poppy
  • Population genetics, large-scale genomic resources, genetic mapping, and dissecting QTLs
  • GWAS study for expediting trait-associated genes/loci
  • FCM-based genome and ploidy estimation
